Designing Your Version of FI: Lean, Fat, Coast & Barista FIRE
Financial independence is not a rigid dogma. It is a spectrum of lifestyle possibilities.
Financial independence is not one destination. It is a spectrum.
The target number you choose and the timeline you pursue should reflect your personal values, not an internet consensus. The purpose of FI is intentional living.
LeanFI vs. FatFI
LeanFI targets modest living expenses (often under $40,000/year), allowing a significantly smaller portfolio to grant full freedom sooner.
FatFI supports comfortable or affluent lifestyles ($100,000–$200,000+/year) with generous travel, family allowances, and wide safety margins.
Neither is superior; both are valid applications of the exact same mathematics to different lifestyle preferences.
CoastFI: Let Compounding Finish the Job
CoastFI occurs when your invested assets have grown large enough that, without ever contributing another dollar, compound growth alone will reach full retirement by your target age. You only need to earn enough to cover current living expenses, opening the door to career changes, reduced hours, or entrepreneurship decades early.
BaristaFI and Partial Retirement
Rather than funding 100% of expenses from portfolio withdrawals, BaristaFI pairs moderate investment income with part-time, seasonal, or passion-driven work. This drastically reduces required capital and sequence risk while keeping life engaging.
Mini-Retirements and Lifestyle Flexibility
Instead of deferring all autonomy until age 45 or 55, many choose sabbaticals, seasonal careers, or mini-retirements throughout their 20s and 30s. The financial margin you accumulate unlocks options immediately.
Redefining Success Beyond Work
Traditional metrics center on titles, salaries, and corporate prestige. Financial independence allows you to measure life by health, relationship depth, curiosity, and creative control.
There Is No Single “Right” FI
Whether you continue working full-time on your terms, start a boutique business, travel the world, or focus on family, the principles remain constant. The freedom is yours to sculpt.
